Generaliteitslanden

Generaliteitslanden
   A Dutch term used to indicate the parts of the Republic that were directly governed by the States General. These were the territories conquered during the later part of the Re volt, or Eighty Years’ War, with Spain. After the conclusion of the Peace Treaty of Munster in 1648, these regions were Staats Vlaanderen (now part of the province of Zeeland), Staats-Brabant, Staats-Limburg, and, from 1713, Opper-Gelre, in the south. In the north, Westerwolde (now part of the province of Groningen) was also a Generaliteitsland.
